Mr Gavin McLean was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in January 2018 in Craigavon Area Hospital with an elective practice, which focuses exclusively on knee surgery. In 2019 he joined The Belfast Knee Clinic, a partnership of Specialist Knee Surgeons.

Mr McLean has experience in cartilage, meniscal and ligament injury repair and reconstruction, osteotomy, limb realignment and patella stabilisation surgery. He is also skilled in the management of early and advanced osteoarthritis including partial and total knee replacement and revision knee replacement.

Mr McLean graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2003 and underwent basic surgical training in Northern Ireland and Scotland. He entered higher specialist surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Northern Ireland in 2009 completing the FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) examination in 2015. Mr McLean gained recognition on the GMC Specialist Register in 2016.

On completion of surgical training Mr McLean undertook 2 postgraduate fellowships. Initially in Belfast, working with David Beverland in Musgrave Park Hospital. Then at the AVON Orthopaedic Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol gaining valuable experience in sports injuries, knee ligament reconstruction, osteotomy, cartilage and meniscal repair, osteotomy around the knee and knee replacement surgery including partial and revision knee replacement.

During his specialist training Mr McLean took extra time out to focus on medical research relative to trauma surgery and was awarded a Medical Research Doctorate (MD) by Queens University of Belfast in 2017 for his thesis focusing on the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in cardiac surgery, hip fractures and polytrauma. Mr McLean retains a keen interest in research.

Mr McLean has also completed a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine (DipSEM) from Cardiff Metropolitan University. Through the contacts made through Sports and Exercise Medicine he has taken on roles as the medical doctor with the Welsh Football Association, Ulster Rugby teams and the Belfast Giants Ice Hockey Team.
