What is an Ultrasound scan?

An Ultrasound scan, often referred to as a sonogram, is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture real-time images of the internal structures of your body, including muscles, blood vessels, and organs.

At the Clinic we carry out a wide range of Ultrasound scans:

  • General – scanning of all internal organs within the abdomen
  • Paediatric – carried out by a specialist paediatric radiologist
  • Musculoskeletal – scanning of muscles, tendons and joint, including steroid injection
  • Breast – used during our symptomatic breast clinic, and for the insertion of markers for breast surgery
  • Shear Wave Liver Scanning – liver disease is one of the major challenges in imaging today, and our ultrasound system incorporates the latest technology to deliver a whole new level of image quality, enabling clinicians to evaluate liver disease easier and faster. Note: we are the only private clinic in Northern Ireland to offer this service.
  • Interventional – steroid injections, biopsies, drainages
Understanding the Ultrasound process

The process of an Ultrasound scan begins with the application of a special lubricating jelly on the skin, which helps in the smooth movement of the transducer (Ultrasound device) and enhances the transmission of sound waves. This handheld device then emits high-frequency sound waves that travel into your body, bounce off tissues and organs, and produce echoes that return to the device. These echoes are converted into images by a computer attached to the Ultrasound machine. The whole process typically takes around 15-45 minutes and because it utilises sound waves, it does not expose you to any radiation.

Why might you need an Ultrasound scan?

There are various reasons why your doctor might recommend an Ultrasound scan. It could be to monitor the health and development of a foetus during pregnancy, diagnose conditions like gallstones or kidney stones, guide doctors during certain medical procedures, or evaluate symptoms such as pain, swelling, or infection.

How to prepare for an Ultrasound scan?

Preparing for an Ultrasound scan depends largely on the type of scan you're having and the specific area to be examined. For example, if your abdomen is being scanned, you may be required to fast for several hours prior to the test to ensure maximum accuracy of the results. However, if your pelvis is the area of interest, you may be asked to drink a lot of water before the test to fill your bladder, which helps in better imaging. Your doctor will give you precise instructions based on your individual needs.
