When a part of the vestibular system is affected by illness or injury, it can cause symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbance, nausea, motion sensitivity, disequilibrium and/or imbalance.
Examples of conditions we see at the Clinic include:
- Vestibular neuronitis and labyrinthitis
- Headaches such as migraines
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Ménière’s Disease
- Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
- Mal de Débarquement (MdD).
Physiotherapists working in this area collaborate with both our ENT and neurology consultants. Treatment begins with reducing the primary symptoms and understanding their persistence. From there we work to minimise or eliminate any secondary issues.

Can you self- refer for vestibular physiotherapy?
Yes, you can self- refer to vestibular physiotherapy. You do not always need a doctors referral although in some cases a consultant referral can be useful.
How long will my appointment be?
Your first appointment may be up to 1hr 30 minutes long but usually around 1 hour.
Should I bring someone with me to my appointment?
We recommend you bring someone with you to your initial appointment as some of your symptoms may become irritated during assessment. The physiotherapist will advise for subsequent appointments.
What will happen at my appointment?
You will be asked questions about signs and symptoms, what medications you are on, previous episodes, assess balance and eye movements.
Could my symptoms worsen?
You may feel more dizzy, nauseous or unbalanced initially following your assessment / treatment.
