Research interests
Colorectal (bowel) Cancer, Family cancer syndrome, Tumour invasion/ cancer genetic and gene therapy. Underwent a 2-year gene therapy research programme at the internationally acclaimed Colorectal Unit at St Mark's Hospital and was awarded Doctor of Medicine (MD) 2003 by Imperial College London. The funding was provided by Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK).
Awards received
Scholastic Award given during 2nd professional Examination. Awarded the UpJohn ENT undergraduate prize and McQuitty Scholarship. Best Houseman of the year in Royal Victoria Hospital and awarded the Allison post-graduate Clinical Prize. Awarded 5 distinctions in undergraduate subjects (Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Medicine and Surgery). Awarded Honours for both BSc and MBBCh BAO. First colorectal surgeon to obtain European Board certification in Northern Ireland (2009). Awarded a travelling fellowship funded by the Japanese Polyposis Registry to visit a Surgical Unit at Omiya, Tokyo.
General Surgical and advanced Colorectal Training:
I did my general and colorectal training in Northern Ireland. After spending 6 months training in the regional colorectal unit at Royal Victoria Hospital, I went to Box Hill Hospital, Melbourne, Australia from 1st March 2003 to 30th January 2004 for a period of Colorectal Clinical Fellowship training.
Finally, I was a resident Surgical Officer at St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow London from 1st April to 30th September 2004.
St. Mark's Hospital is a national and international referral centre for intestinal and colorectal disorders. As well as clinical services covering all aspects of colorectal disease and intestinal failure, it has many research interests and a very active programme of teaching and education.
